GRANDAD AND THE FLYING MACHINES

Grandad and the flying machines
Standing there…….in his faded denim jeans
His face……..chalk white
Telling Dad and Mum……..what he saw last night
Hands on hips……trying to explain
The events……..outside his window pane
I stood there…….eyes open wide
The truth……is what he was trying to hide
Smiling to myself…….walking away
I couldn’t ignore…….what he couldn’t say
He was trying not to tell…..Mum and Dad
Something important…….not good….not bad
That he couldn’t quite remember
What he saw that night in September

Grandad was truly the best
A great man……forget all the rest
Every night…….he’d tell me a story
About his younger days……..in all his glory
Some thought these tales untrue
It seemed there was nothing……he couldn’t do
I believed him…..the stories….I believed them all
In my eyes……Grandad stood very tall
All those great rock bands…….he had seen
Those mighty Saints games……where he’d been
So many movies……..that he knew
The Magnificent Seven……and Lord of the Rings too
An older man…….still in his teens
And then he saw……..the flying machines

The story……..I heard him tell
My parents thought……..he wasn’t well
I knew……..he never lied
He skirted the truth……..a mile wide
I waited awhile……knocked on his door lightly
He admitted……to lying……just slightly
To protect them……..from the wonders he saw
Feeling a little afraid……..I wanted to hear more
He told me about the pretty colors
And the noise…….of a thousand propellors
The war-drums……the lead-guitar sound
As these machines……hovered above the ground
“It was like one of those movie scenes
¬†Said Grandad, “When I saw those flying machines”

He told me…….the whole colorful tale
It was like he had just found the Holy Grail
He’d woken up…….late that night
The noise……..such a terrible fright
Saw those lights…….heard that sound
Ran outside…….looked around
Friendly aliens…….everywhere
And they wanted to take him back…….where
But no……..he couldn’t go yet
He had to see me……..so I wouldn’t fret
“Are you going to go, Grandad?”
“Yes, my little mate”……He was feeling so sad
“Yes, tonight I will go
But never forget…….I will always love you so!”

He told me he’d visit…….from time to time
It would be our secret…….his and mine
The aliens knew stuff……….we’d never know
And that’s why…….he had to go
Things……..we’d never understand
He could teach me…….life would be grand
He wanted me…….not to feel sad
To look after myself……and Mum And Dad
“Could I watch him go……..wave good-bye?”
“No”,…..he said……and we both knew why
I’d trick him……..watch from a hiding place
Keep my cool…….stare into space
Gandad smiled…….I knew then
I’d never see him go…….my dear old friend

That night…….with tears in my eyes
I stared up…….at the starry skies
Fell asleep……much to my dismay
Didn’t wake up……….’til the following day
Ran inside……there was Dad
Very confused…….and very mad
“Someone’s wrecked the backyard
Chopped it up pretty hard
And your Grandfather’s gone amiss
I’ll bet he’s had a hand in this”
Well….Dad had a shock in store
Told him some of what Grandad had said…………..the night before
“Gee Dad…….It’s just like one of those movie scenes
Grandad’s gone off with the flying machines!”
